as local school districts hold budget votes and board of education elections. Polls will be open from 12-8 PM in Copenhagen, Lowville and South Lewis, while in Beaver River and Harrisville voting will take place between 1-8 PM. A breakdown for each district is included below. BEAVER RIVER: Voters in the Beaver River district will be voting on $16,860,126 budget, a $637,807 (3.8%) increase over last year's $16,222,319 budget. Two propositions on the ballot ask voter approval to purchase three new buses at a total cost not to exceed $303,128 and allowing a student to serve as an ex-officio, non-voting member of the school board. Brian LaChausse is running unopposed for another five year term on the Board of Education of the Beaver River Central School. COPENHAGEN: Copenhagen voters will be voting on a $10,475,405 budget, an increase of $116,785 (1.1%) over last year's budget of $10,358,620. A proposition on the ballot asks for voter approval to transport Head Start students to the Lowville Head Start Center. Troy W. Buckley is running unopposed for another five year term on the school board. HARRISVILLE: Voters in Harrisville will be voting on a $10,750,767 budget, an increase of $503,826 (4.7%) over last year's $10,246,941 budget. A proposition on the ballot will ask voters to approve the purchase of two new 66 passenger school buses at a cost not to exceed $222,000. Denise Avallone and Heidi McIntosh are both running unopposed for new five year terms on the school board. LOWVILLE: Lowville voters will be voting on a $27,653,956 budget, an increase of $499,512 (1.8%) over last year's $27,154,444 budget. Propositions on the ballot seek approval to purchase three new buses, at a cost not to exceed $360,000 and authorization to transport Head Start students on regularly scheduled bus routes. Jeffery Hellinger, Michael Judd and Steven Lyndaker are each running unopposed for a new five year term on the school board. SOUTH LEWIS: Voters in South Lewis will be voting on a $25,559,993 budget, an increase of $374,163 (1.5%) over last year's $25,185,830 budget. Voters are also asked to approve the purchase of three new school buses, at a maximum cost of $299,417, and to establish a new ten-year capital reserve fund in an amount not to exceed $2,500,000. The fund would be used to cover renovations, improvements and additions and would be funded through year-end budget surpluses. The district has the only competitive school board race in the county, with incumbent Thomas Burmingham being challenged by Debra J. Plemons. All five district budgets are within the allowable tax cap levy. The percentages above are actual budget increases, with tax levy increases (the amount to be collected through property taxes) varying by district. |
