decision on Tuesday. Should the Village layer of government remain, or should the Village dissolve into a hamlet in the Town of Diana will be the question of the day. The village, home to around 628 residents, started a dissolution study in 2016 to determine the benefits and downsides to remaining a village. A committee was formed, with five members representing the Village of Harrisville and five representing the Town of Diana. Both Harrisville Mayor Gary Williams and Diana Supervisor David Parow were members of the committee. The Development Authority of the North Country (DANC) assisted with the study. Results of the study indicated that if the village was dissolved, village residents could see a 57% decrease in property taxes while town residents would see a 2% decrease. This figure is based on New York State making a $109,376 annual payment, in perpetuity, as a result of dissolution. Results and documents from the dissolution study can be found on the DANC website. Polls will be open for Village residents only from 12-9 PM at the Diana Municipal Office, located at 5952 Old State Road Extension. |
