Port Leyden, NY- I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Pam and Kevin
Ward Sr., parents of Kevin Ward Jr., for their first in depth interview since the
    death of their son.

Kevin Ward Jr. was tragically killed during an August 9, 2014 Empire Super
Sprints race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park, when he was struck by a car
driven by Tony Stewart, after Kevin exited his vehicle during a race caution
following a brush-up with Stewart. Kevin was just twenty years old at the time of
    his death.

Criminal charges were never filed against Stewart, and a civil case filed against
Stewart by the Ward family was officially settled on April 12, 2018. Terms of the
settlement were sealed by the court.

The video below is a full ranging interview with the Wards and is the first time
they have been able to share their full story. We wanted to provide as much of
the raw version of the interview as possible, so they had an opportunity to tell
their full story. It's a little lengthy, but they discuss many aspects of the case.

We start out with some background on Kevin Jr., and the impact he was making
on the racing world at such a young age. Mr. and Mrs. Ward then take you
through the night of the tragic race and the days that followed. They candidly
discuss their feelings on the criminal investigation, their decision to file a civil
case, as well as sharing stories about Kevin and his accomplishments.

The Wards stress that they don't believe Stewart intentionally meant to kill their
son, but felt he should be held accountable for what they describe as reckless
actions leading up to the accident. They also address, in depth, Kevin's decision
to exit his car and the accusations that he was under the influence of marijuana.

We also discussed Kevin's legacy. This year marks the fourth year of the Kevin
Ward Jr. Scholarship, awarded to a student in the South Lewis district interested
in pursing a career in the racing field. An annual scholarship race will take place
this year on July 21 in Port Leyden. There will also be a Kevin Ward Jr. Memorial
Race on May 19th at the Evans Mills Speedway.
