Lowville, NY- CLewis County has received a pair of stipend grants from the
state, totaling over $791,000 for the county's emergency management system,
according to Lewis County 911 Operations Coordinator Cheryl A. LaLonde.

The county was awarded $653,718 through the State Interoperable
Communications Grant program, an increase of around $100,000 from last year's
amount, and an additional $138,118 through the Public Safety Answering Points
Grant (PSAP), which was slightly less than the 2017 amount. Funds from both
come from 911 surcharges placed on phone service throughout the state, with
distribution to counties based on 911 center call volumes, county population and
other factors.. Overall, $55 million in funding between the two programs was
announced for counties across the state. The programs are administered by the
state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services.

Ms. LaLonde said the PSAP money will be used for maintenance at the 911
dispatch center, personnel costs and training for dispatchers. The larger stipend
will be used for maintenance of the county's new radio system.
