Lowville, NY- Lewis County Undersheriff Jim Monnat has been asked to retire
by Sheriff Michael Carpinelli and is no longer with the Lewis County Sheriff's
    Office.

County Manager Ryan Piche said that he had spoken with the Sheriff this
morning and was informed of the Sheriff's decision to ask for the Undersheriff's
retirement. Mr. Piche said the situation was an internal matter at the Sheriff's
Office that he did not wish to comment on further.

Lewis County Human Resources Director Chris Boulio said that the
Undersheriff position is designated as an "exempt employee" when it comes to
civil service procedures and serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff. His office has
not received a separation form at this time indicating the Undersheriff is no
longer employed. He noted that it was not unusual to not have a separation
form immediately as long as it is provided before the ending of a pay period,
which would be next Friday for County employees.

Mr. Monnat had served as Undersheriff for all 6 years of Sheriff Carpinelli's
tenure, following a 26 year career with the Lowville Police Department. It was
announced that Mr. Monnat would serve in the position of Undersheriff prior to
Sheriff Carpinelli's first election to the Sheriff's post in 2011.

Sheriff Carpinelli has not responded to our request for comment. We spoke
with Mr. Monnat this afternoon, who confirmed he was no longer with the
department and declined any official comment at this time.
