units will conduct a fire support training exercise at Fort Drum, N.Y., from August 11 through August 24, U.S. Special Operations Command Public Information Officer Kenneth McGraw told linkinglewiscounty.com via email. "Residents may see increased flying activity in the vicinity of the Carthage and Lowville areas during this time period", Mr. McGraw said. "All training has been coordinated with the appropriate civilian and military authorities." The exercise, named Operation Jaded Thunder, includes members of the Aviation Tactics Evaluation Group(AVTEG), based out of Fort Bragg, NC, according to communications from the group to Village of Lowville officials. The operation will use ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) aircraft and equipment for the collection of overhead imagery, to be used solely against designated military personnel participating in the exercise, according to the letter to the Village of Lowville. Any images or data collected, not related to the training, will not be used to support any level of law enforcement or for any other purposes, according to AVTEG officials. Village officials had to sign off on the request to "use persistent overhead imagery to gain up-to-date imagery of the area," prior to the exercise, according to the letter. The imagery will be provided to the Village at no cost, for use with zoning and other projects. |
