Lewis County's 24/7 Home for News,
Sports, Weather, Events &  More
Lowville, NY- Lewis County Legislators on Tuesday approved a request from
Lewis County Clerk Linda Hoskins to begin accepting credit/debit cards as a
payment method for transactions at the Lewis County Clerk's office.

The board voted 9-0 in favor of a resolution that allows the Lewis County
Clerk's office to enter into an agreement with Elavon, a merchant processing
    company based in Atlanta, GA.

Under the agreement, the County will be required to purchase two processing
terminals at a cost of $399 each, at a total cost of $798. This would equip each
clerk station at the office with the ability to process a credit card transaction. If
the customer choses to pay by credit/debit card they will be prompted to accept
a 3% service fee. The County will keep 100% of the transaction fee and Elavon
will receive the 3% service fee for processing the transaction.

Currently, the office only accepts cash or checks as payment for any
transactions conducted, which include court fees and fines, purchasing records
    and other miscellaneous fees.

The credit/debit card option should be in place soon, although a date was not
provided. Mrs. Hoskins did not respond to our multiple requests this week
attempting to acquire a date the new system is expected to be operational.
