| LACS Students Hold the 'Trial' of Alexander T. Wolf This Morning With the Honorable Charles C. Merrell Presiding 07/21/17 03:30pm |

had the pleasure of covering the 'trial' of Alexander T. Wolf today, with incoming third-grade students at Lowville Academy and Central School. "I was inspired to write the reader’s theater script after reading the book, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka," the students' teacher Kelly Adsit told us. "The book was originally published in 1989, but has remained quite popular and is a great teaching tool to demonstrate point-of-view and perspective as part of English Language Arts curriculum. By pairing the script that I wrote along with the book, I find that I can get even the most reluctant reader involved," Mrs. Adsit said. "My co-teacher, Teresa Rennie, and I try very hard to keep students engaged and wanting to come to school even during the hot summer months. Together we have created a fun learning environment where students feel safe to question and learn about their community." The students held a mock trial, with a prosecutor, defense team, jury and witness. Supreme Court Justice Charles C. Merrell presided over the trial, with court bailiff Tod Hamburg participating as well. The class spent a few weeks preparing for the trial. Ms. Adsit and Judge Merrell have held the trial for the past eight years. Wolf on trial as a public menace. Miss Brickhouse Pig is the star witness against Alexander T. Wolf. Miss Brickhouse Pig’s brothers became “ham dinner” after Mr. Wolf went to their door-step asking to borrow a cup of sugar. However, Mr. Wolf cannot be tried for murder because there is insufficient evidence and plausible deniability due to the craftsmanship of the structures being made from straw and stick. Miss Brickhouse Pig will testify that Mr. Wolf is a clear and present danger to the residents of Lewis County. "This summer the students have also learned how math and English are important in businesses, such as Key Bank, Lowville Post Office, Freeman’s Taffy Stand, and of course the Lewis County Courthouse," Mrs. Adsit said. "The trial is always a great deal of fun and we appreciate that Honorable Judge Merrell takes time out of his busy schedule to preside over our case. His staff also makes us feel very welcome!" The class also took a step back in time this summer as they visited the one- room school house on the Lowville Academy grounds. Their adventures this summer taught them just how fortunate they are to live in such a wonderful community that willingly embraces our young learners and helps to unlock doors for learning, according to Mrs. Adsit.
