Glenfield, NY- A SkillsUSA project at the Howard G. Sackett Technical Center
in Glenfield has been created to benefit local veterans.

The SkillsUSA American Spirit Team project was spearheaded by a team of
three students who organized the planning and logistics. The team members,
Hope Cooley (senior, Lowville Academy), Brianna Lawrence (senior, South
Lewis), and Josie Wood (senior, South Lewis) are all part of the Cosmetology
program at the Howard G. Sackett Technical Center, with their instructor,
    Sharon Smith, advising them.

Students brainstormed different ideas for a patriotic event and decided upon
the flag display, according to a release. Among the goals: honoring soldiers
past and present, promoting patriotism and the American way of life, and
helping local veterans. The proposed site for the flags is a stretch of land,
approximately 109,000 square feet, off of State Route 12. Patriot’s Field will be
a visible display of approximately 250 American flags standing around 6 feet
tall. The rows of flags will resemble the positioning of tombstones at Arlington
    National Cemetery.

To raise money, the public was afforded the opportunity to sponsor one or
more of the flags. With a $25/flag donation, participants were able to attach a
personal note in memory or in honor of a service or family member. Each
sponsor was then invited with their families to attend an evening Memorial Day
Ceremony on the May 25th. The flags will be on display until May 29th. They
will then be respectively taken down and stored for next year in what is hoped
    to be an annual event.

“When I first heard about the idea, I was worried about how we were going to
pull it off, but now I’m really excited,” says Hope, who is handling advertising
and marketing for the event. “I am really happy with how generous people have
been and how they have been willing to work with us.”

“There has been a big outreach from fellow students and others,” adds Mrs.
Smith. “The American spirit is contagious.”
