November 7th, the process for interested candidates will soon get underway. A number of positions will be up for election this fall in towns and villages across the county, as well as all ten county legislative districts. With interest to get involved low in recent years, we thought it would be a good time to go through the process for anyone who may want to consider running. The process will officially get underway on June 6th, the first day potential candidates can start collecting signatures for their designating petitions. The petitions can be obtained at the Lewis County Board of Elections office, located at 7550 S. State St. in Lowville, or by calling their office at 315-376-5329. Completed petitions must be returned in person to the office, no sooner than July 10th and no later than July 13th (or postmarked no later than July 13th if mailed). The first step is to determine the party you will be seeking to represent (ie. Republican, Democratic, Conservative, etc.). In order to qualify, you must obtain signatures from 5% of the registered voters of the designating party in the district you are seeking office. This means if you are seeking, for example, the Republican designation for Town of Croghan Supervisor, your signatures must be registered Republicans in the Town of Croghan. Registered Democrats can not sign your petition, nor can registered Republicans outside of the Town of Croghan. At the end of this article you can find a chart showing the required number of petition signatures for each designating party by office. If more than one person submits designating petitions for the same party and office, a primary election will be held on September 12th. Offices to be Filled: As noted above there are a large number of positions on the ballot this election cycle. Each of the ten Lewis County Legislature seats are up for election. We reached out to each of the current legislators to see if they intended to seek reelection. District 1: Republican Philip Hathway, who currently holds the seat, stated he will not be seeking reelection after serving since April of 2009. District 2: Republican Michael Tabolt, who has held the seat since January of 2006 and has been Chairman of the Board since 2013, stated he will not be seeking reelection this fall. District 3: Republican Craig Brennan, who has served the board since September of 2013, said he will not be seeking reelection this fall. District 4: Republican Bryan Moser, who has served since 2014, will be seeking to hold onto the seat this fall. District 5: Democrat Richard Chartrand, who has held the seat since 2014, did not respond to our request asking if he planned to seek reelection this fall. District 6: Republican Andrea Moroughan, who has served since 2014, plans to seek reelection. District 7: Republican Greg Kulzer, who has served two terms, will be seeking reelection in the fall. District 8: Republican Lawrence Dolhof, serving since 2014, will seek reelection this fall. District 9: Republican Roscoe "Rocky" Fawcett, plans to seek a second term this fall. District 10: Republican Jerry King, who has served since 2006, did not respond to our request asking if he plans to seek reelection. A number of people have expressed interest in running for the assumed to be vacant seats in districts 1, 2, and 3. In fairness, we will wait for the designating petition period to conclude before announcing candidates in each of the districts. Town and Village offices to be filled are included in the chart below:
