    Lewis County, NY- Budget votes and Board of Education elections will take
    place at local school districts on Tuesday, May 16. You can find details on
    each of the county's five school districts below. Polls are open from 12 PM until
    9 PM, except for Beaver River and Harrisville, where poles are open from 1 PM
    until 9 PM. Beaver River is the only district exceeding the allowable property
    tax levy increase and will need a 60% override vote for the budget to pass.

    BEAVER RIVER:
    The district has proposed a budget of $16,222,319 for the 2017/18 school
    year, an increase of 1.4% from the 2016/17 budget of 15,998,475. The tax
    levy, the amount to be collected through property taxes, is proposed at
    $5,243,878 for 2017/18, which is an increase of $102,821(2%) of last year's
    levy of $5,141,057. Beaver River's tax levy increase surpasses the state
    property tax cap limit, requiring an override vote of 60% of voters to pass the
    budget. Samuel Chamberlain and Bobby Cobb are both vying for the one five-
    year term on the Board of Education. There will be a proposition on the ballot
    to approve the purchase of three new buses, not to exceed a cost of $306,262.
    Proposition 3 will seek approval to increase the amount for the Croghan Free
    Library from $40,000 to $45,000. Sample Ballot:








































    Copenhagen:
    The district has proposed a budget of $10,358,620 for the 2017/18 school
    year, an increase of $98,115(1%) from the 2016/17 budget of $10,260,505.
    The proposed tax levy, the amount to be collected through property taxes, is
    $1,719,185 and up $53,709(2%) from the 2016/17 amount of $1,685,476.
    Alfred E. Tomaseli is running unopposed for a five-year term on the Board of
    Education. A proposition on the ballot will ask voters to approve transportation
    of Head Start students to the Lowville Head Start Center.

    Harrisville:
    A budget of $10.2 million has been proposed for the 2017/18 school year, an
    increase of $702,661(7.4%) over the 2016/17 amount of $9.5 million. The tax
    levy, the amount to be collected through property taxes, is proposed at
    $3,674,345, a $72,046(2%) increase over the 2016/17 tax levy of $3,602,299.
    Parish Atkinson is running unopposed for another five-year term on the Board
    of Education. A proposition on the ballot will seek approval for the purchase of
    one school bus at a cost not to exceed $118,000. Proposition 3 will seek the
    allocation of $55,000 for the Harrisville Free Library, a $5,000 increase from
    the previous year.

    Lowville:
    The district has proposed a $27,154,444 budget for the 2017/18 school year,
    an increase of $1,015,234(3.9%) from the 2016/17 budget of $26,139,210. The
    proposed tax levy amount to be collected through property taxes of $3,940,071
    is the same as the levy in the 2016/17 budget, resulting in no levy increase.
    Three incumbent members of the Board of Education, Rebecca Kelly, Thomas
    Schneeberger and Michael Young, are running unopposed for new five-year
    terms. Four additional propositions on the ballot can be viewed on the sample
    ballot below.






































    South Lewis:
    The district has proposed a budget of $25,185,830, an increase of $412,725
    (1.7%) over the $24,773,105 budget for 2016/17. The tax levy amount to be
    collected through property taxes is proposed at $8,406,897, an increase of
    $1103,048(1.2%) over the 2016/17 tax levy of $8,303,849. Three candidates
    are competing for two five-year seats on the Board of Education, incumbent
    Andrew Liendecker and newcomers Dawn D. Ludovici and Lynnette Parker. A
    proposition on the ballot will seek approval to purchase three new buses at a
    cost not to exceed $311,340. Proposition 3 on the ballot seeks to appropriate
    $80,000 to be divided equally by the four public libraries in the district.
