with a dinner at the Lowville Elks Lodge last evening. The dinner, made possible through fundraisers and sponsors, is currently in its third year and is intended to show appreciation to the county's first responders. First responders and a guest were invited to enjoy the evening at no cost. Ray Falk, of the Lowville Elks Lodge, started the annual dinner in 2015, building off the firefighters appreciation dinner that was last held in 1995. Mr. Falk said there were about 60 attendees in 2015, which increased to 120 last year. Last night's dinner saw around 220 attendees. "The event is definitely growing in attendance," Mr. Falk said, noting next year they may have to consider plans for reaching capacity. The evening began with a happy hour from 5:30 PM until 6:30 PM, followed by a dinner consisting of a salad, sirloin tips with mushrooms, garlic chicken pasta, glazed carrots, red skin mashed potatoes and rolls. After dinner a presentation honoring firefighters with fifty years of service or more was held, and awards were given by the EMS Council. A guest speaker, retired detective Mark DeVito, then addressed the crowd, praising the work done by the group consisting mostly of volunteers. The evening concluded with a performance by the band Split Decision. The following three firefighters were recognized for 50 or more years of service:
members in the crowd to notify his office when they see exceptional efforts from one of their department's members. "I get it, we're a humble group," Mr. MacKenzie said,"We just go out and do what we have to do and we return in service hopefully to return home to our families, knowing that we serviced our communities. But we should really look out for ourselves and look out for each other, so if there is something exceptional that goes on within your community or by your own agency, bring that information to my office because we really want to know about it." |
