    Lewis County, NY- The organizers of the local 2017 National Police Week
    event say that events this year had the highest attendance and more
    community sponsors than ever before.

    On Friday, May 19, the auditorium at Beaver River Central School was filled
    with officers and community members for a National Police Week ceremony,
    celebrating its seventh year in the county. Those in attendance honored the
    families of local fallen officers, recent retirees, and audience members currently
    serving in any branch of law enforcement. Dispatchers, Corrections Officers,
    Road Patrol, and Administrators present also gave special thanks to their
    families who sacrifice much in support of them.

    Guest speaker, St. Lawrence County Undersheriff Brooks Bigwarfe, showed
    pictures as he told of events surrounding the  2014 abduction of two young
    Amish children, while calling the eldest abducted sister the “ real hero.”  

    On Sunday, May 21, a huge turnout for the 3rd annual 5K concluded Police
    Week 2017, with numerous medals and door prizes distributed. The run,
    dubbed the PAW 5K-9 (Police Appreciation Week 5K), included demonstrations
    from five law enforcement K-9s.

    Sixth-grade students from around the county participated in an essay contest
    for Police Appreciation Week, with winners from each school as follows:
    Sawyer Schwendy from BRCS, Aubree Smykla from Copenhagen, Nadia
    Atkinson from Harrisville, Ava Moser from River Valley, and Noah Comet from
    Lowville.

    The Committee would like to thank the many community sponsors and all those
    who helped in any way to make National Police Week 2017 so successful!
