Tuesday to hold an official groundbreaking ceremony for the soon to be parking lot and green space at the location. Members of the Lowville Lions Club, who are heading the beautification portion of the project, were on hand with Village of Lowville officials and representatives from GYMO Architecture, Engineering and Land Surveying, the firm that created the site plan. The lot, which became vacant after a fire in October of 1999, was purchased by the Village of Lowville in 2015. The village decided to create a parking lot with up to 18 parking spaces with a two-hour limit, as well as a green space with benches, a community clock, flagpole and greenery. The parking lot and drainage is being funded by the village. The Lowville Lions Club kicked off a $60,000 campaign last summer to fund the park's beautification as part of their legacy project. The group is purchasing a four-face clock, benches and lighting for the location. Lowville Lions President Sheree Vora said that the group is within $8,000 of their goal at this point, when taking into account the $47,000 they have received in addition to $5,000 that has been pledged. "This is a dream come true for many members of our community," Lowville Mayor Donna Smith said during the ceremony. Mrs. Smith and her family presented Mrs. Vora with a $1,000 donation during the ceremony. Although the park hasn't officially been named, Mrs. Vora said her vision is for a mini Times Square, with a ball drop from the flagpole for New Years Eve and a Christmas tree display through the holidays. "I think Lowville Lions Times Square would be a great name," Mrs. Vora said. Most of the work on the project is expected to be completed by June 10th, when a celebration will be held to open the park. The Lowville Lions would like to complete their fundraising soon as the project date approaches. Every little bit helps, Mrs. Vora said, encouraging community members to give what they can to help with the beautification of a central location in the village.
