as part of the $45 million handed out to counties across the state via the State Interoperable Communications Grant, administered by the state Division of Homeland Security. The money is to be used to upgrade critical technology and improve emergency communications, according to a release from Governor Andrew Cuomo's office. In Lewis County, the money may be able to be used to cover an approximately $296,000 budget gap currently in the county's capitol radio fund. In a meeting of the board of legislators Ways and Means committee on Tuesday, members approved recommending the full board vote to take the funds from contingency, after a lengthy discussion. Lewis County 911 Operations Coordinator Cheryl LaLonde said Thursday that the money would still probably need to come from the contingency fund in the short term, to cover current obligations, but should be able to be replaced after the grant funding is received and its use approved by the state. The county is currently in the process of wrapping up a nearly $11 million upgrade of the Emergency 911 system. A $6 million grant had been previously received from the State Interoperable Communications Grant fund for the project. |
