Lowville, NY- We are very excited to be hosting the Lewis County CARES
(Community Action Resources & Education Support) Forum, in conjunction with
the Northern Regional Center for Independent Living, on Saturday, February
11th at the Fire Hall in Lowville! The forum will begin at 1 PM.

The forum was organized as an effort to connect members of the public directly
with some of the community action and addiction prevention organizations in
our communities. With a number of problems facing our area, we are constantly
asked by people what can they do to help and what resources are available.

We feel there are many issues that could benefit from more community
involvement. Tackling issues such as poverty, mental health, and community
outreach could all have a positive impact on the addiction epidemic our
communities are facing. This is your opportunity to meet with and hear from
some of the organizations working on solutions to many of these issues, to see
where your time and efforts could most efficiently be used.

The forum will begin at 1 PM, with six guest speakers each scheduled to talk
for about ten minutes on a variety of issues. This portion will be facilitated by
Lowville Mayor Donna Smith. Speakers include:

  • Aileen Martin- NRCIL/Bridges Out of Poverty Trainer- Topic- Poverty

  • Rob Rosalanko – A Peer in Recovery- Topic- Addiction

  • Rodger Hicks – Licensed Mental Health Counselor- Topic-
    Mental/Behavioral Health

  • Dr. Shirley Tuttle-Malone- Topic- Health & Wellness and Addiction

  • Scott Mathys- Lewis County Opportunities – Topic- Domestic Violence,
    Poverty, Community Outreach

  • Justin Astafan- Lewis County Search & Rescue- Topic- First Responders,
    Emergency Services

Following the guest speakers, around 2:15 PM, attendees will have the
opportunity to interact and ask questions of each speaker on an individual
basis. There will also be a variety of local agencies on hand with tables, to
share information on their services and talk with parties interested in
volunteering and taking action. The forum is scheduled to conclude around
    4:30 PM.

There will also be demonstrations on how to properly administer Narcan and
an interactive demonstration on how to correctly administer CPR on a child.
Mountain Prevention Services will have an interactive display, featuring a
child's room, where parents must pick out suspicious looking items.

Again, this is a great opportunity, for anyone interested, to learn more about
how to take action on improving the quality of life in our communities. Come for
the entire afternoon, or just an hour or two! We hope to see you there!
