315/680 Area Code Overlay Starts Feb. 11th; What You Need to Know

    Lewis County, NY- Back in July of 2015 the New York State Public Service
    Commission approved an area code overlay for the 315 area code, which
    covers all or portions of eighteen counties in central New York.

    The addition of a new area code in central New York was prompted by strong
    demand for additional telephone numbers. In making its decision, the
    Commission determined that the best way to meet demand for new telephone
    numbers in the region and minimize customer impact was to overlay a
    new area code over the existing area code.

    The new 680 area code will be introduced as an overlay to the existing 315
    area code beginning in March. Starting February 11th, ALL customers will need
    to dial 10 digits (the area code plus the 7-digit number) on calls in their area
    code, and 1 plus 10 digits for calls to numbers outside their area code.

    Here are some tips to make the transition as smooth as possible:
  • When making any local calls, you must dial ten digits, the area code (315 or
    680) followed by the seven digit phone number.

  • You will need to manually update all contacts in your cell phone to include all
    ten digits of a contacts phone number.

  • Any alarms (security, medical, etc.) need to be programed with the ten digit
    number. Most companies providing these services should have already
    contacted you to reprogram their equipment, but if they haven't you should
    contact them to ensure your equipment will remain functional.

  • Businesses should update any printed and online materials to include their
    area code with their phone number.

  • All customers who currently have a 315 phone number will keep the 315 area
    code. Beginning in March, any new numbers in the area may be assigned
    either the 315 or 680 area code.

  • Fax machines and other technology that dials out will also need to be updated
    with ten digit phone numbers.

  • Calls to reach 911 Emergency Service will remain three digits.
