Justice Court and one of the two elected Town of Lowville justices, has recently resigned from both posts, citing health reasons. Justice Yarina had not handled any cases over the past few months. With just over a year remaining on her term in the Village of Lowville, village officials have named acting and associate justice Richard Dafone to fill the vacated post until the village's election in March. The winner of the March election will then fill out the remaining year of Justice Yarina's term, with an election the following March to fill a new four-year term. Judge Dafone has expressed an interest in running for the position in March, according to Lowville Mayor Donna Smith. At a Town of Lowville Council meeting on Thursday, town officials opted not to fill the vacant position- electing to have the town's other justice, William R. Kiernan, handle all town cases. The council intends to abolish the vacated position in the future. One justice position will be on the town's ballot in November, when Judge Kiernan's current term is up for election, with the winner thereafter serving as the lone justice for the town. |
