Lake Placid since Tuesday, competing in the 2017 NYS Snow Sculpting Championships. The competition concludes this afternoon, with judging at 2 PM, followed by the announcement of the winner at 3 PM. Team Captain Joshua Howland, of Carthage, and team members Derrick Howland, of Carthage, and Louis Howland, Sr., of Natural Bridge, spent the week sculpting their entry, 'Into the Wild', depicting a Native American and eagle. The team is competing against three others, with the winner earning an all expense paid trip to next year's U.S. National Snow Sculpting Competition, held in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Each team starts with an 8 ton block of snow, and must create a sculpture using only hand tools. Slowly, the blocks transform into a detailed work of art. Work must be completed by 2 PM this afternoon. Updated 3:30 PM- The team captured 2nd place overall, while bringing home the People's Choice Award as well as the Artists' Choice Award.
